The Maritime Emissions Challenge

International shipping accounts for approximately 2.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions — a figure set to grow as global trade expands. The International Maritime Organization's 2050 strategy targets a 50% absolute reduction in GHG emissions from 2008 levels, with net-zero ambitions by 2050.

For vessel operators, the transition pathway is complex: existing fleets have 20–30 year asset lives, conversion economics vary significantly by vessel class, and the regulatory landscape is evolving rapidly across flag states, port authorities, and international bodies.
